Things are going off shelves from local stores and pharmacies during this pandemic period. One of such things is hand sanitizer. When Centers for Disease Control recommended social distancing and self-isolation, people hushed up and started stocking up on non-perishable, medications and other important things. After that hand sanitizer were not seen in nearby markets.
The CDC recommends that sanitizers contain 60% to 95% alcohol in order to eradicate germs. Sanitizers work best on clean hands and may be less effective when hands are greasy or visibly dirty, according to the CDC.
Handmade hand sanitizers can also curb microbe exposure — but only as long as they have the correct ratio of alcohol to other ingredients, according to CNN.
What ingredients you need to make hand sanitizer?
Hand sanitizer can be made at home with 3 main ingredients. Isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol (90% or higher), aloe vera gel and few drops of essential oil (lavender, thyme, clove, cinnamon leaf, peppermint etc.)
Isopropyl alcohol is considered to be the main ingredient while making sanitizer at home. Make sure to use alcohol that is at least 90% alcohol or above as it will be efficient enough to kill off germs and bacteria.
Aloe vera is available in most of the stores. Alternatively, if you have aloe vera plant just cut off a leaf from the plant and use it for healing and sanitizing properties. It is also important for the recipe as it has hydrating properties, it keeps skin from drying out. Without aloe vera, the alcohol in hand sanitizer will make skin dry.
When it comes to essential oil, they have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties.
What else needed to make sanitizer?
- A mixing bowl
- Measuring cups
If you don’t have any of these things, don’t panic. As they are necessary to make the measuring and cleaning process much easy.
How to make hand sanitizer?
It’s about the ratio. For example, if you’re using Isopropyl alcohol that’s 91 percent, you’ll want a 3:2 ratio, 3 tablespoons alcohol to tablespoons Aloe. If you are using 99 percent Isopropyl alcohol, you’ll want a 2:1 ratio (3 T alcohol, 1.5 T Aloe).
Assuming that you are using 90 percent isopropyl alcohol, pour 1 cup into a mixing bowl. Next, add 2/3 cup Aloe Vera gel. Add 8-15 drops of the essential oil of your choice. Mix them together with a spoon, then use a funnel to transition the mixture into a bottle with a pump.Alternatively, a spray bottle will work, too.
